Birch Knit Afghan Free Pattern

It’s getting to be that time of year… We’ve had a good amount of snow on the ground here in New York. All of which has since melted away and we get to enjoy what I assume will be the last few days of actual nice fall weather. Before we know it, it will be freezing, the heat will be on, my skin will be dry and cracked… oh wonderful Winter. But that is not what this post is about!

A friend recently saw our Birch Beanie and asked if we could replicate the look in the form of a blanket.

I was excited to knit something big and heavy as we started to enter colder weather and this blanket did come out quite heavy!

I used Lion Brand Hometown USA yarn in the color “Springfield Silver” paired with size 13 circular needles. The simple knit and purl stitch pattern works up quickly and created a comfortable heavy afghan perfect for snuggling on the couch on a cold night.

The edge of the afghan is worked in knit 1, purl 1 ribbing all the way around which pairs really nicely with the column of single knit stitches popping out across the afghan.

This would be a great project for a beginner knitter looking to perfect their knit and purl stitch technique! If you’re brand new at knitting, there are tons of videos online that teach you how to cast on, work a knit stitch and purl stitch. Just search “how to knit” on YouTube and you’ll be on your way in no time!
